Rustic Kitchen… PART III~ The Plan

The Plan
kitchen arch design

I had already added some color to the kitchen.  Paint is the inexpensive, quick design remedy.  Using my faux finish experience, I covered the walls in a deep black cherry red wash and began an intricate, hand-painted design around the tall arched doorway that leads to the pantry.  I kept with this paint and design direction during the planning.

There was a lot of sketching and daydreaming and 3am strolls thru the space trying to redesign.  Like a balloon, the project expanded to a huge expensive renovation then back down to size with Rusty’s reality check on my creative imagination.  Then Rusty offered the best suggestion…move one wall into the great room.

Testing out the "new" kitchen space

Of course, in his mind it was only a foot or so.  I envisioned my free-standing island in the middle (which I had used in all my other houses) so I had to push the wall out at least 5’ to have clearance.  I marked the proposed wall on the floor with blue tape and lived with it for awhile.  Turns out the Great Room was so large that the only one using that whole area was Sherman the dog when he would nap under the table against the wall!

Now things started to fall into place.  The basic layout was to remain the same, but I was bent on my kitchen looking different than all the other homes built out there with the same floor plan.  I had imagined high end details like ironwork and custom tile; dramatic stove chimney center piece and whimsical sink design; additional counter seating and beautiful finishes that I could do myself.
